Chris and Mr. and Mrs. Rodriguez and family, I hope the best for you all.

Although your futures now are not what you thought just days ago, never forget that Chris, you are still able to have a great future and and fulfilling life. This incident changes the way you will achieve your goals and how you will live your life, but it did not take away your ability to do so. From what I have read, it sounds like you are a wonderful kid with a really bright future ahead of you and this doesn't change that. You are still a wonderful kid with a great future!

It would be my wish to take away all the pain and confusion you are experiencing. Never before have I felt genuine love and concern for people I have never even met. Chris, know that you and your family have touched the lives of so many people and that there are people who you will never meet or probably even hear of that love you and wish the best in life for you and are thinking of you as you go through these difficult times.

With great admiration for your strength and positive perspective, I truly hope that you overcome these challenges and the difficult times that face you to find that your life is still to be lived, and your future is still bright.

Dear Chris and family,
We are praying for you, and sending a little something for your family fund raising. We know it is a hard time for you right now, but we know God is already puting in place many blessings now and in your future. Our son is ten too, and also loves music (he plays the sax), so when we heard about you, it really touched our hearts. Chris, we pray the very best for you and your family.

You all have been in our hearts and our thoughts non-stop since we learned of the terrible incident. Jesse really misses Chris and is so concerned.

We are participating in all Crocker activities and hope to visit as soon as Chris is up to it.

Keep being strong for Chris. He's so lucky to have such caring, loving parents who will support him through this. He also has a loving and supportive group of friends waiting to help him.

Please let us know if there is ANYTHING we can do.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Rodriguez,
I can't stop thinking about Chris and would like to do something to help. I teach second grade and have a therapy dog that comes to my classroom almost every day. She brings comfort and smiles to everyone she meets. Her name is Flora and she received her certification through the Marin Humane Society. She is a Havanese and will be two years old in April.
Let me know if you are interested in having Flora visit Chris and we can set up a time.

I read an article about you in the Chronicle a few days ago. Words can't express the sorrow I feel for you and your family. It's hard to find anything positive to say. I hope this wakes people up and moves them to take action against the crime and poverty we're facing today.
I'm wishing for a miracle. You sound like such a sweet young boy and you are lucky to have such a loving family.
For what it's worth, you have touched the lives of so many people. I hesitate to say turn this into a positive, but you could possible turn this into something positive and when you're able, you can travel around the country speaking out against violence.
You are in my and my family's prayers.

Mike (from the comment above), i hope that you are doing better. I wish that that one bullet would not have been able to hit you. Stay strong!! Maybe this happened so that you would be able to focus on a new chapter of your life. Explore! you never know what will happen in this world. And if all of my experiences have taught me anything, they have taught me to keep on living.

When i was younger (im only 16), i used to watch a movie called "Auntie Mame" and the two lines that i remember most today, and i use all the time, are "live live live" and "life is a banquet and some poor suckers are starving out there."

I think you have just found the entrees my friend.

Take it easy and get lots of rest!

The Rodriguez family,
I was saddened to hear about Christopher and the challenges you have ahead.

I thought about contacting the tv show Extreme Home Makeovers (ABC) about Chris's incident. They have done wonders for 100+ families. There is an application form but I couldn't fill in the information.

Please..when you have the time, look into it. Or have someone close to you assist you.

The community has shown their love for Chris. I'm sure we would have no problems yelling,"Move that bus!"

You are always in our thoughts!

Chris and family,

I'm so sorry this happened to you. I want to make sure you know that if you become a wheelchair user you can still play basketball and participate in other sports. There's a great organization based in Berkeley called Bay Area Outreach and Recreation Program (BORP). They have several great wheelchair basketball teams, two power soccer teams, and sponsor other sports and trips -- for example up to the adaptive ski school in Tahoe which teaches people with disabilities to ski. If you're into horseback riding, there's a great riding program for kids with disabilities located in Orinda, called Xenophon. If you're into swimming, there's a wonderful adaptive swim program called SNAP that has classes at the Berkeley YMCA downtown. When you're ready to get back into sports -- there's lots of opportunities for fun, competition, community, and/or exercise. Lots of great people and community involved in all of these. I wish you the best.

As the mother and aunt of two people with spinal cord injuries, my heart goes out to the Rodriguez family. I know that there are many adjustments and changes in all of your lives as a result of this tragedy. But I also know that Chris can go on to live a full and active life, and even to continue to make music and participate in sports.

I've read in newspaper reports that the Rodriguez family will have to move and to buy a converted van. I'd like to suggest alternatives that may be less expensive.

If you don't live in a hilly area, there are ways of getting around using steps. I have a ramp for my daughter, and her father, whose house has more steps, installed a lift. We are in a two story house, and did some remodeling so that we would have a bedroom and full bathroom on the first floor for my daughter.

As for the van, neither my daughter (quadriplegic) nor my nephew (paraplegic) has needed one. With help, my daughter can slide into the passenger seat of our car. My nephew can transfer himself and put his wheelchair in the back, and as an adult has bought a standard sedan outfitted with hand controls, so he can also drive.

I'm sure that the occupational therapists in Christopher's program can make other helpful suggestions.

It is a youth activity league for children in the bay area. We are leaving for Atlanta for a "wheelchair basketball" tournament tomorrow. We are also involved in the "hand-cycling" group. We have come to know all of the other children and families involved in his age group 8-14. It is a great support system for families.. Jordan began the program 3 months after he left Childrens Hospital following a 4+month stay .. I have thought of contacting you as a fellow KP employee however I wish to respect your privacy. Please feel free to contact me at my residence e-mail Easter707@aol.com. Warm Regards, Diane

I read the news today that Chris will be getting out of the hospital soon. That was great to hear. Chris is a marvelous person and an example of God working through him in a troubled world. I have prayed for Chris' full recovery from the beginning, and I will continue praying for him everyday. He is the kind of person the world needs more of and so are his wonderful loving and forgiving parents. Let's keep working for the good of all.

Hi Chris, I've been following your story ever since it was first reported here in Florida and I am so happy to hear how well you're doing.

You sound like such a wonderful person, with a great heart and spirit, that I know you will suceed and be truly happy in life. With your determination and great attitude I know that you will be able to accomplish anything you put your mind to.

You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

PS. I love that you've already learned to do a wheelie in your chair!

Hello to Chris and Family,
I am an intern at a local new station in the bay area and this was one of the first stories in which grabbed my heart from the second I walked into the newsroom. I've been following your recovery and I know your family must be so blessed to have such a strong willed young man in their family. You are a hero to many and many people hold your recovery close within their prayers.

For what may seem like a rough road ahead, your whole life is ahead of you and I have no doubts that it will be filled with a magnitude of accomplisments and happiness.

I wish you and your family an amazing and joyous return home.
Bless you all.

If I were in your parents' situation, I would sue the robber for the medical bills. The robber was such a coward, as his weapon was much too powerful, able to penetrate a building from across the street. I would begin the action by photocopying the hospital bill, inform the robber of the costs incurred as a result of his actions, and insist that he pay the hospital bill. If this is unsuccessful, I would contact a lawyer regarding this, and even go as far as garnishment and asset seizure.

friends of the family said...

Response From Chris's Parents:
Thank you for your comments. Yes, the gun appeared too powerful for the situation. Yes, the bullet had a metal jacket. However, it is unlikely that there are any assets or wages to consider as the shooter was committing a robbery as a way of earning money. Thank you for your concern as we concentrate on Chris' healing.

Dear Chris,

You are a very brave young man and we are all pulling for you. I think it is wonderful that you play the piano and I hope you continue -- I always wanted to play such a cool instrument.

I saw this video of a wrestler who had no arms or legs but who advanced to the Georgia high school wrestling championships. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xhVaoi7_TI) His story reminded me that life is really what you make of it, and that with dedication and self-confidence human beings can do amazing things.

You are in my prayers and I know you have the brightest of futures ahead of you.

Dear Parents of Chris Rodriguez:

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Dan Dumas and I, like your son, was involved in an event in 2005 which caused a serious injury to my spinal cord. My doctors told me that I would never walk again. However, after undertaking an aggressive and consistent exercise therapy program, I now walk with the aid of canes.

I was so impressed with my exercise program and the improvements it helped me attain that I decided to start my own program and studio. I opened SCI-FIT in Pleasanton, California in September of 2007. I grew up in the East Bay and wanted to provide others in this area the same opportunity I had when I was injured.

I would like to offer Chris a free 3 month enrollment in SCI-FIT so that he will have the opportunity to maximize his chances of recovery from his incident. The road ahead for Chris is promising and I want to help him in his journey down that road.
The cost of this exercise therapy is, unfortunately, very expensive. My philosophy is that no person suffering from a serious spinal cord injury should be turned away from this type of therapy simply because of a lack of funds; everyone deserves a chance and I will personally cover the cost of Chris’s therapy at SCI-FIT for these 3 months. You can arrange a schedule that works for you and Chris with our facility manager at any time in the next few weeks (clinch@sci-fit.org).

Please visit my website at www.sci-fit.org to find out more about my program. I understand that things are happening fast and that right now you are focused on Chris’s immediate medical needs. I just wanted to put my offer out there for your consideration. If you would like to speak with me, about anything, feel free to call me at 510-908-4498 and I hope to see you at one of the upcoming fundraising events.

Best Wishes,

Dan Dumas,
Founder of SCI-FIT

Dear Christopher,

On behalf of the fifth grade classes at Bentley School, we are happy to let you know that we have made a deposit in your Trust Account for the amount of $3,563.50. Our students felt very strongly that they support you in your recovery from the shooting incident and want you to know you have people in your community that are with you in this journey.

The students raised the money through raffle and bake sales as well as an auction of a nine pound cupcake. Through this project you have given us a gift by helping to create an opportunity to “pay it forward”.

We wish you and your family all the best and we look forward to hearing of your continued recovery and success.

Dear Christopher Rodriguez, I understand your chronic nerve pain. I have the same kind of pain. I have a spinal cord injury from an airplane crash.

When I was ten years old, I began studying the violin. At age 14, I studied the piano and the violin in The Young Musicians Program at The University of California at Berkeley (a music school for gifted children). As an adult, I played my violin in the U.C. Berkeley symphony and I became a teacher at YMP where I coached violin students. Through music, I learned the importance of:
Focus
Challenge
Integrity
Responsibility
Confidence
Dedication
Determination
These important qualities that I learned from my hard work, in my music studies, has helped me to get through the difficult challenges after my spinal cord injury. When I face something that is difficult today, I think about the mental energy that I built while I practiced the piano and violin when I was 14 years old. I use that same mental energy to concur my challenges today with focus and determination.
I encourage you to read my article on my website. It‘s called Having a Survivor Instinct
www.DonnaAllenLive.com

After a spinal cord injury, there are different pain types that one might experience:
* neuropathic pain
* musculoskeletal pain
* visceral pain
There may be a solution to your chronic neuropathic nerve pain (burning sensation, pins and needles sensation). ASK YOUR DOCTOR about nerve pain medication. I take a prescribed medication called Nortriptyline. Nortriptyline is prescribed for depression but it is also prescribed for nerve pain. It affects the central nervous system. It works for me. Some other nerve pain drugs, that you could ask your doctor about, are Neurontin and Lyrica. I hope this helps.

To Chris and Family:

I just wanted to share with you one of the most important things I learned with my own spinal cord injury –– every injury is different. No one ever told me that and I had to find out on my own.

No one can predict how much better Chris will get or when.

I'm now two years post-injury and still getting better. I can walk with a cane, ride an adapted bike (check out borp.org) and I swim like crazy. (When the time is right, get into a pool-- the weightlessness of the water changes everything).

I'll second another comment, I read here. Continue to explore the available medications for pain, spasticity, urological issues, etc. There's always another option if something's not working.

And... you know that warm, glowing feeling you get when you think about how many people are thinking about you, praying for you, urging you on? Hold on to that. It's so important.

I'll leave you with the words I use to get me going when I think I can't make it through another PT session:

Keep reaching, keep hoping, keep moving. (usually,it's just KEEP MOVING!)

You can do it.

You can read about me and my adventures in SCI on my blog. howsrobb.blogspot.com

Chris,
You are an amazing young man and what a blessing you and your family are to each other. Many years ago (over 30!), I attended Oakland public schools, and while Crocker Highlands was not my elementary, I had many friends who did go there. We went to McChesney Jr. High, which is now as you know called Edna M. Brewer, and I remember her being the principal there while I attended! Although I don't know you, I feel a connection through school, and I have 3 kids ages 10, 13, 15, the youngest being a boy like you!
I don't know if your family is religious, if not, then I hope you are not offended by my saying to always, always have God in your life. He will carry you, sustain you, and lift you higher than you can ever imagine.
God bless you always, as you continue to be in my prayers.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Rodriguez,
As a parent of a disabled child I know how hard it is. But there is always hope and anything you wish can happen if you believe and do something about it. My name is Marina Grohmann, president of a company called Ablegaitor. My son has Cerebral Palsy and can not walk independently. In 2001, I took my son to Europe for intensive physical therapy. That's how Ablegaitor was born.
They have taken the standing frame to another level by making active rehabilitation and movement possible. By leaning side to side and pulling the handgrips, the user can walk forward, backward and turn. This is the only device in the world which allows paralyzed people with Spinal Cord Injury (up to C5 level), to walk independently. Please visit our web site www.ablegaitor.com. There are three links on the front page showing an adult with SCI T12 level, child with Spina Bifida and a child with Cerebral Palsy.
We are located in San Francisco. Please give me a call if you are interested trying the device.
I wish you all the best

Believing that you already have the ability to walk unassisted and imagining yourself walking is a powerful treatment. I believe that you have that ability now. I can see you walking now. Dear Christopher,

After reading the article about your amazing story in the Oakland Tribune explaining your endurance and spirit in pursuing your dream to once again regain the ability to walk, I knew that I had to get in contact with you. My name is Kyleigh Kuhn and I am a UC Berkeley student who founded an organization called the Roots of Peace Penny Campaign. We have raised over $100,000 from students of the Bay Area contributing their quarters, nickels and dimes, of which 100% are dedicated to building schools and soccer fields on former minefields to provide safe grounds for children of war-torn countries. We have built three schools in Afghanistan, providing education for hundreds of children and clearing their lands of mines; weapons left after the guns of war have silenced, claiming life and limb of thousands of children each year.

In some ways, both you and I are fighting for the same cause… the freedom to walk. Chris, if you are interested, I would be honored to work with you in launching our 2009 Penny Campaign. I believe that your message of strength and perseverance over random acts of violence coincides so beautifully with the mission of Roots of Peace. I believe that you can take your story as an opportunity to be a voice for children around the world, and if you are interested in the work that I am involved with, I truly think that it would be such a beautiful way to help you heal emotionally from your struggle as you would literally be leading the way in preventing children and from loosing their ability to walk.

Please visit our website at www.rootsofpeace.org and then click on the “Penny Campaign” to learn more about the organization and see pictures. We will be launching the 2009 Campaign on September 11th at a Bay Area school. If you are willing, I would be so honored if you would speak at the event. Cheryl Jennings of ABC7 News is the co-founder of the organization, so there will be press coverage. Please don’t feel obligated, but do know that whether you choose to work with the Campaign or not, I am touched by your story and truly think you are an amazing individual.

Shine on!!!

Chris, Keep on tryin' kid. You can do anything you set your mind to. Don't let anyone tell you different.

I have no words to make what happened to you OK or even better, so I will speak of what I do know, and I know how to heal.

I've had 10 surgeries in my life and some were very extensive, but I always surprised the doctors with how quickly I managed my way out of the hospital.

A little trick that I use to keep going when it seems too hard is to count out loud how much more I can do than I thought I could. If I thought I could do 5 reps I let the rehab doctors count to 5 and I started at 6.

If you are feeling scared, then you remember your goal and remember this. there can be no hero if there is no fear. Heroes do it scared is all.

Hang in there kid. with the right mind set (nothing can keep me down) you can do anything.

Hi Chris,
I left a message on your blog on March 25, 2008 at 9:53 PM. I can see that there are many people who are reaching out to you. This shows that many people have a lot of great love for you. I hope you were able to ask your doctor about the nerve pain medications that I told you about on my message to you on March 25th. ASK YOUR DOCTOR if it could work for you and if it is safe enough for your age group.

I believe that you are a very creative young man and you will do well in life because of your creative edge. There are many people who have physical challenges as our's and we live very active lives; authors, musicians, social activists, business owners, computer programmers, editors, photographers, web designers, and public speakers, to name a few. I can see you doing something very creative as a teenager and as a young adult. I see you getting involved in youth groups who stimulate your intellect and give you a sence of belonging and accomplishment.

My spinal cord injury is at the T12-L1 level and I am very active in my own life. I have written a manuscript about my survival of an airplane crash and I am looking for a publisher. I've written managezine articles and newspaper articles. I've been on radio shows talking about women and disability. I'm writing a speech because I will do some public speaking that will inspire people to reach for their dreams in life.

Check out my new Blog at bog.DonnaAllenLive.com

Dear Chris,

I'm glad you recovered from your life-threatening injury. I just heard some news that if the man who almost killed you is convicted, he could be facing life in prison. It was still wrong for him to shoot you even though it was an accident.

I just wondered if the piano is your favorite instrument. If it is, we both have something in common - the piano is our favorite instrument! Isn't that so cool?

You may have read a letter from me before. I was 10 years old and in the 4th grade at the time. My 11th birthday had passed about 1.5 months ago. Now I am in the 5th grade and still in the same school class, because my class is mixed - it is a class for 4th and 5th graders.

One of my favorite genres of music is R&B. Is your favorite genre of music R&B? I like R&B because of its smooth style. If your favorite music genre is R&B, why is it so?

Thanks to the recovery, it makes me imagine about you getting killed and not surviving. When I imagine that scenario, I realize that it was so unreasonable. It makes me think about a "First 48" episode I watched. "The First 48" is a show about detectives solving homicides, or murders, and catching the killers. One night in Minneapolis, MN, a 32-year-old homeless man named Robert Bavinck (ba' vik) asked two other homeless people, Adam Heldt (held) and Mattie Grassrope, for quitting alcoholic drinking, but Adam shot or beat Robert and killed him. Mattie didn't even call 911! Both suspects were identified by two other people, Nathan, the 911 caller, who led detectives to Mattie, and Ryan, the witness, who led detectives to Adam, also known as "Roach". Thankfully, Adam and Mattie were caught and interrogated, or questioned, about Robert's murder. Adam didn't want to talk; Mattie told detectives everything that happened, and Both suspects were charged. If convicted, Adam faces 15 to 20 years in prison for second-degree murder, and Mattie faces 2 to 3 years for felony aiding an offender.

Robert's mother, Charlotte, reflected on the life of Robert. Because his biologial parents were alcoholics, Robert was adopted by Charlotte at age 9. "He was just loving and happy," Charlotte said. He ran for the homeless at age 18, but then drank alcohol, which led him to homelessness. Charlotte taught a lesson: Some people think that the homeless people don't have families, which isn't true. Robert's okay and is being taken care of.

Alcohol was the main root in this case that brought Adam and Mattie's nasty sides. So the lesson in this case is that you DON'T DRINK ALCOHOL!!!

This "First 48" episode was the main thing I wanted to write to you about. The sentences for Mattie and Adam are far less than the sentence for the man who almost killed you. I hope you feel really happy with this letter.

Love,
John-Paul
Oakland, CA

P.S. To Chris' family - Keep up the good work with Chris. STAY STRONG!!!

Dear Chris and you family,
I am a teacher and educational film maker. As with so many moments in life, they cannot be changed. However, we can learn from them. It is the hope of learning that has motivated me to produce my next educational hip-hop video on what happened to you and others who were never meant to be shot, but were. The music video "Don't Know Where the Bullet Goes" explores the forces of such an event. Our message is that you think a gun is in your control, but when you shoot a gun there is no guarantee where that bullet will go. Think before you act. I wanted to write an email to you Chris and your family, but the email link doesn't work. I would be honored to meet with you and your family. My website is:
